JEFFERSON — Despite a conplete-game effort from Patrick Hickox, two key errors helped Oconee County take a 4-2 win over Jefferson Friday night in a key battle for first place in Region 8-AAAA.
The two teams have split the first two of their three-game series. Jefferson (14-7, 5-3 Region 8-AAAA) will travel to Oconee County (15-5, 6-2) on Saturday for the final game of the series with a chance to reclaim first place in the region.
Hickox allowed just eight hits but gave up single runs in the first, third, fifth, and seventh innings. The Dragons scored one run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1 and scored once in the seventh on a Kasen Rainey RBI single. But Billy Finch, who represented the tying run, struck out to end the game.
Jefferson mamaged just five hits. Rainey had two hits and an RBI and Justin Cole also had two hits. Zac Corbin had a hit and Clayton Jones had a RBI groundout for the Dragons.
