A man shot in midtown Gainesville Tuesday night has died from his injuries.

Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said the victim, identified as Dennis Ronald Gayton, 47, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center after the incident and succumbed to his injuries there.

The shooting happened before 10 p.m. at a location on Martin Luther King Blvd near Carlton Street.

"Officers and emergency personnel found a male subject.  The subject had been shot inside a vehicle," Holbrook said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been assisting in the investigation.  Holbrook said the Hall County Sheriff's Office helped with the scene Tuesday night.

"We did an extensive search of the area, utilized K-9s in an attempt to locate the suspect or suspects as it related to this case, however we were unable to locate anyone as of last (Tuesday) night," Holbrook said.

He said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of Carlton and MLK Tuesday night is asked to call the Gainesville Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division at 770-534-5254.
