The Georgia Department of Transportation was in the process of paving over the repair work area on Ga. 75/Helen Highway Tuesday afternoon.
Crews were applying asphalt to the area where a drainpipe had to be replaced.
The work began Monday morning and a section of the highway between Duncan Bridge Road and Hulsey Roads has been has been closed since.
"Drivers will notice that this new portion of asphalt over the drainage pipe will be a more course material until the current resurfacing project on SR 75 is done," Strickland wrote in a media release. "When resurfacing, an inch of this material will be milled off and a finer mix placed on top, making the roadway smoother. The scheduled completion for the 5 miles of resurfacing on SR 75 north of Asbestos Road to State Route 17 (SR17) is April 30, 2017."
In an afternoon update, GDOT officials were hoping to open the stretch of road by 8:00 p.m.
