Truett's Carden throws 1-hitter, belts 2 HRs DH sweep

CLEVELAND — The Truett McConnell baseball team used a career day from senior Chris Carden to sweep Point University in a doubleheader to open the AAC series, winning by scores of 3-0 and 9-4. The Bears get back to .500 in conference play with the win.

In game one, Carden got things started in the third with a two-run bomb to left center to take a 2-0 lead. Tate Gaines brought home the final run of the game in the fifth on a RBI single.

Carden earned the win, pitching a one-hitter while scattering two walks and striking out eight.

In game two, the Bears got things going early, scoring two runs in the first and second innings. Carden earned his third RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly in the second inning to make the score 3-0. TMU also put two runs on the board in the fourth inning, sparked by another Carden RBI.

After a three-run Skyhawk sixth, Carden came through to get back some runs, starting a three-run sixth for the Bears with a two-run homer down the left field line. He also entered the game to pitch in the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded and got out of the jam, earning a save after a one-run seventh inning.

The senior from Fayetteville, Georgia, finished the day with 8.1 innings pitched, scattering two hits and one run. He was also 3-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored and six RBI.

The Bears will look for the three-game sweep over the Skyhawks tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
