CLEVELAND — The Truett McConnell softball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 13 Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies. Despite two nail-biting games on Evann Todd Day, the Bears fell 1-0 and 3-0 in the two games.
Prior to the start of game one, the family of former TMU softball player Evann Todd was honored as part of Evann Todd Day. Todd passed away suddenly earlier this year, and the event today raised money for the TMU Evann Todd Missions Fund to help softball players go on mission trips.
In a pitchers' duel, Taylor Nix held the 13th-ranked Grizzlies to just eight hits in the game. GGC put up the only run of the game in the third inning off a double to left field.
In game two, the Grizzlies scored all three runs in the first inning off back-to-back home runs. The Bears put runners in scoring position multiple times but could not bring them home as the Grizzly defense clamped down.
Nix finished game one with six strikeouts and no walks, giving up just the one run.
The Bears will next take on Hiwassee in Cleveland on Monday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
