GAINESVILLE — The No. 1 doubles team of Roan Thompson and Michael Head won the final six games to rally for a three-set victory and clinch a thrilling 3-2 win for the Gainsville boys tennis team over Dacula Thursday in Region 8-AAAAAA action at Longwood Park.
Thompson and Head trailed 3-0 in the third set after splitting the first two sets (6-7, 6-3) to clinch the match for the Red Elephants, who moved to 3-0 in region play.
Also getting the wins for Gainesville were Dylan Pineda at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory and from No. 2 doubles of Thomas Carter and Max Wuest with another three-set win, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
The Lady Red Elephants also took a narrow 3-2 victory over the Lady Falcons.
The Gainesville girls also got strong doubles play in the win. The No. 1 doubles team of Madi Kiser and Paige Ackerman beat Mary Beth Lord and Brittany Trif 6-2, 6-3
while the No. 2 team of Paige Patterson and Grace O’Keefe whipped Aubrey Gaston and Rylee Fitzgerald 6-0, 6-0. Ali Waggoner beat Lainey Thomas 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to help clinch the match.
In singles, Haley Frankum lost to Samantha Long 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot and Grayson Wagner fell to Maya Clark 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for Gainesville.
Both Gainesvill eteams will travel to Lanier on Monday in another key region battle.
