Snow covered parts of north Georgia at daybreak Sunday and the area, as far south as Gainesville and Athens, is bracing for a hard freeze expected by mid-week.

The snow, not a heavy accumulation in most places, was confined primarily to the northern tier of counties along the Tennessee and North Carolina borders.   Places like Blairsville, Blue Ridge, and Ellijay were among the places where snow covered the ground.   Travel, for the most part, has not been impacted.

Overnight lows, meanwhile, are expected to fall into the low- to mid-20s by Thursday morning when readings in Gainesville and Athens are expected to be around 25.  Mountain areas, such as Blairsville, are expecting lows in the teens Thursday morning.

After that, will come a warmup across north Georgia with more seasonal readings forecast for the rest of the week in most places.

Meanwhle, New England is about to slammed by a major winter storm. Blizzard conditions are forecast for New York City and Boston with heavy snowfall expected elsewhere in the region.
