Hall County School District Superintendent Will Schofield called it the largest SPLOST funding request that he could remember - $27.5 million for three major construction projects in the school district.

School board members unanimously approved the construction expenditures at a Monday evening meeting.

The bulk of the funding, $19.2 million, will go to the major expansion of the original South Hall Middle School campus, now known as the Academies of Discovery.

"[The construction work] is in preparation in 2018-19 for South Hall Middle School coming home," said Schofield. "That will be our largest middle school at that time coming up to a 1,500-student capacity."

Work at West Hall High School will include $3.25 million worth of improvements at what is known as the "Old Gym."

"We'll be adding some locker rooms, we'll be adding a field house, we'll be adding a health classroom...an exciting expansion for the West Hall community," said Schofield.

North Hall High School will see continued campus renovation, including upgraded heating and air, to the tune of $5.1 million.

While the state of Georgia will contribute $5 million for the construction work, the bulk of the money for the projects comes from SPLOSTs IV and V.

"Again, I just can't help but thank this community for the support of the one-penny sales tax," Schofield said.
