Deshaun Watson Way now official

GAINESVILLE – You can add another 60-yards to the legacy being built by Deshaun Watson, quarterback for the 2017 FBS champion Clemson Tigers and Gainesville High School graduate.

However this time neither a tight spiral threaded between defensive backs nor a scramble from the pocket contributed directly to the additional distance.

Rather it was Ordinance 2017-03, passed unanimously last week by the Gainesville City Council, which turned 180± linear feet of city roadway - previously known as Touchdown Drive - into Deshaun Watson Way.

Under sunny skies late Sunday afternoon, at the conclusion of the Gainesville High School 125th Anniversary Celebration, Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan, accompanied by Deshaun’s mother, Deann, officially unveiled the red-and-white lettered street sign.

Dunagan read loudly the proclamation honoring Watson’s athletic skill, academic achievements and civic involvement: “And whereas Deshaun Watson has shown that his commitment and determination extends beyond the football field; and his desire to give back and help improve his community…and has earned the respect and admiration from all his teammates and peers through his hard work and determination, and has given inspiration to many, be it resolved that we (City Council) do hereby honor and commend Deshaun Watson for his achievements both on and off the football field.”

Deshaun was unable to attend the ceremony in person as he was involved in training activities in California, preparing for the NFL draft in late April.

Deshaun’s aunt, Sonia Watson, bubbling with excitement, said she wanted to express Deshaun’s appreciation for the honor bestowed by the city.  “We are just so proud of him, it don’t even matter what team selects him (in the NFL draft).”
