MACON — Jefferson and Commerce kept their streaks going as Traditional State Champions and Buford won its first title since 2014 Saturday as they combined for 13 individual titles on the final day of the three-day State Wrestling meet at the Macon Centreplex.
It was Buford's first Class AAAAA title and first since winning the Class AAA title three years ago. The Wolves produced five individual champions -- Logan Ashton (106 pounds), Nick Stonecheck (126), Charlie Darracott (138), Trent Ferguson (152), and Jack Ness (195) -- and it completes a double title season after the won the Duals title last month.
Jefferson ran its title streak to 17 straight, which now spans four classifications, after holding off Gilmer for the Class AAAA state title. The Dragons had just one individual champion in Bates Dawson (132) but also had four runners-up and one third place finish.
Commerce defended its Class A state title with seven individual title-winners leading the way. Dalton Flint (138), Jake Brewer (145), Owen Brown (160), Chase Forrester (170), Mitchell Patton (182), Cole Chancey (195), and Cade Ridley (285) all brought home gold medals for the Tigers.
Overall, 17 individual wrestlers in our area were crowned champions, including Jackson County's Chandler Saine (138) and Kyle Graham (195), Lumpkin County's and Zach Matthews (220) in Class AAA and Chestatee's Matthew McClellan (145) in Class AAAA.
