Phenix City, AL – Cory Hedgecock drove to the victory in Sunday’s NeSmith Dirt Late Model Series Groundhog Classic at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Alabama.
The win was worth a $2,500 payday for the Loudon, Tennessee pilot.
Chase Edge came home in the second position in his first event of the 2017 season. He was followed by Ashton Winger in third, Montana Dudley in fourth and Forrest Trent in fifth.
Action was slowed for eight caution periods for mostly minor incidents. The first yellow flag flew on lap 2 when Rodgerick Dykes’ car received damage from contact and was unable to continue. The caution came out again on laps 10 and 13 were for single car spins.
The field was slowed twice on lap 22. The first time was for Dylan Knowles, who spun off the back stretch, and then for a spin by Ronnie Johnson after contact with Ryan Law sent Johnson’s car spinning in top of turns 3 and 4 on lap 25.
Caution flew again on lap 32 for a spin by Lain Hawk. The caution lights were lit for the final time on lap 34 when Trey Wood came to a stop at the top of turn 1 with mechanical woes.
The NeSmith Dirt Late Model Series takes a short break before returning to action at Georgia’s Cochran Motor Speedway for a double header weekend on Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11.
