Work to replace bridge in Banks County to begin in new year

Crews are soon expected to begin work replacing a bridge over the Grove River in Banks County.

Workers with Talley Construction Company of Rossville are scheduled to begin work on the project on January 29, according to a Georgia Department of Transportation media release.

Georgia DOT officials say the bridge, built in 1938, is on Ga. 59 and carried roughly 3,300 vehicles over the river last year.

The state has planned a roughly 11-mile detour that uses 59, Ga. 15, Interstate 85 and Ga. 63.

"By using an off-site detour route the department can save time and money, as funding doesn’t have to include constructing a temporary detour bridge before work can start," District One GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland wrote in the release.

The $3 million dollar project is expected to be finished by spring of 2019.

The new two-lane bridge will be in the same location as the existing structure, about five miles north of Commerce.
Crews are expected to begin work on January 29, 2018, to replace this nearly 80-year-old bridge on Ga. 59 over the Grove River in Banks County.
An "off-site" detour is planned around the project using Ga. 59, Ga. 15, Interstate 85 and Ga. 63.
