Road work may impact traffic on a major thoroughfare through Hall and Jackson counties in the coming months.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has partnered with Atlanta contractors to replace the concrete on Athens Highway/U.S. Highway 129 near the Hall-Jackson line, and DOT Spokeswoman Katie Strickland says that work will require lane closures.
"There is a single-lane closure every day from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. the next day," Strickland said. "So yes, that means that the contractor that's out there can work all day, during the day, through afternoon drive, but that morning commute, they're not going to be out there."
She said the work is being done at night because the cooler temperatures during the Winter months make it more difficult for the concrete to cure during overnight hours.
The work will be on a stretch of Athens Highway north of Talmo that lasts for just over half of a mile. Strickland said DOT officials hope the work will finish sometime in January of 2018, and she also advises drivers to drive cautiously when driving by the work.
The project represents a more than $1.4 million investment and Strickland said the work is being contracted to Precision 2000 of Atlanta.
