A Lawrenceville woman is facing charges after a Banks County wreck that claimed the life of a Winder man on Thanksgiving.

Kurt Kesler, 51, of Winder died when the 2001 GMC Safari van he was driving was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Taylor McGaughey, 24, of Lawrenceville, according to Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Coleman of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville.

Just before 4 p.m. Thursday, GSP Gainesville was requested to investigate the crash on Ga. 63 at Wells Road in Banks County.

McGaughey’s car was traveling south on Wells Road approaching Ga. 63, failed to stop at the stop sign, and struck the left side of the van, which was traveling east on Ga. 63, Coleman said. After impact, the van left the roadway on the right side, striking a tree with its front. The car overturned onto its right side.

McGaughey is charged with failure to stop at stop sign and second-degree vehicular homicide, according to Coleman.

Kesler’s passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, according to Coleman. They included Deidre Kesler, 49, of Winder; a 12-year-old boy; and a 15-year-old girl.
