SAUTEE-NACOOCHEE — A single-vehicle wreck on Ga. 17 Tuesday afternoon resulted in serious injuries to a Sautee-Nacoochee teen.

A gold 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by the 16-year-old girl was traveling southbound on Ga. 17, traveled off the roadway, then the driver corrected back to the left and lost control, according to Sr. Trooper John Crawford of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

The vehicle crossed over both lanes of Ga. 17, left the east shoulder of the road and struck a curb and mailboxes, going airborne for a brief time before striking a tree with its front end, Crawford said.

An unknown person or persons stopped and helped the injured teen out of the vehicle before much of it was consumed by fire, Crawford said.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Peppermint Lane, about one-half mile inside White County, at 4:45 p.m.

The teen was taken by Habersham County ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was expected to undergo surgery to repair a broken leg Tuesday night, according to Crawford.

In addition to Habersham EMS, fire and sheriff's office personnel from both Habersham and White counties responded to the wreck that shut down the northbound lane of Ga. 17 for an extended time.

The unnamed teen suffered serious injuries, but was in stable condition, Crawford said.

The northbound lane of Ga. 17 is blocked by emergency vehicles responding to Tuesday afternoon's wreck just inside White County.
