Hall County School Board officials unveiled plans for some facilities changes to the upcoming Cherokee Bluff middle and high school at their meeting Monday evening in Gainesville.
The campus, which currently houses Flowery Branch High School, is in need of a varsity baseball facility, which Executive Director of Facilities and Construction for the school system Matt Cox said is leading to the restructuring of several athletic facilities on the site. He said that baseball field was originally planned to be built into the hill next to the school's main driveway off of Spout Springs Road, but officials had concerns about that plan.
"As we got further into the project, into the planning, we began to get uncomfortable with how close that field would be to Spout Springs Road with the speed of cars on that road and the possibility of foul balls flying over to Spout Springs," Cox said.
The new plans, showed to the school board Monday, now place the baseball field where the school's tennis facilities and a secondary football practice field currently sit. The tennis courts, Cox said, will now be built near the driveway where the baseball field was originally planned to be, and a replacement for the overtaken practice field will be built into an embankment near one of the campus' parking lots.
Cox said the work is expected to begin between December of this year and February of 2018. A small building addition that Cox said will add on to the school's weightlifting facility is also planned. Cherokee Bluff Middle and High School is scheduled to open in Fall of 2018.
