Canton's Winslette wins City Jr. Championship, edges local pair

GAINESVILLE — The 2017 Gainesville City Junior Champion concluded on Sunday at Chattahoochee Golf Course with Canton's Walker Winslette holding a pair of local players to take the boys marquee 16-18-year-old crown.

Winslette fired a final round of 75 for a two-day total of 1-under par 143. He held off local prep golfers Bartley Forrester of North Hall and Gainesville's Ryan Hogan.

Forrester shot a final round 70 and Hogan shot a 73 to tied for second place two shots out at 145. Red Elephant's Davis Weaver and Andrew Hughes finished tied for fourth with 2-over par 146's.

Blairsville's Allison Horinek won the girls title shooting rounds of 80 and 76 to finish 18 strokes ahead of the field. Lady Red Elephant Morgan Nicol finished second with a two-day total 174.

Andrew Hughes won the boys 14-15 age group. Hughes, a rising freshman for Gainesville, fired rounds of 72 and 74  to win by three strokes over Myles Jones of Suwanee. Gainesville sophomore Zayne Hilderbrand was third finishing with a 151 total.
 
In the boys 10-13 age group, Drew Vajda from Canton shot 76 and 77 (153) to edge out Dawsonville's Alex Hughes by one shot. Jack Darke of Cumming finished third.
