MT. AIRY — A Habersham County municipal police chief placed on administrative leave last week has resigned.

Mt. Airy Police Chief Corey Allen has submitted his resignation to town officials, Mayor Gary Morris announced Monday afternoon.

That resignation is effective Feb. 2.

Allen has been employed by the Town of Mt. Airy for eight years.

"Tim Jarrell will continue to serve as interim chief while the town goes through the hiring process," a statement from Morris reads. "The Town of Mt. Airy wishes Mr. Allen well in his future endeavors."

No further details, including a timeline for hiring a permanent replacement, have been released.
