With just days left in the regular season only seven of 20 regular season champions are known, which should make for interesting finishing races this week in area high school basketball.
What we know for teams in the 10 northeast Georgia regions in the AccessWDUN coverage area is that both Buford teams have clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region 8-AAAAA tournament; the Gainesville boys have won the No. 1 seed in 8-AAAAAA; and the Lakeview Academy girls will be the No. 1 in 8-A. The Lambert boys will be the No. 1 seed in 5-AAAAAAA, the Morgan County boys won the No. 1 seed in 8-AAA, and the St. Pius boys will be the top seed in 8-AAAA.
Everything else is still up for grabs as far as No. 1 seeds.
However, several teams can clinch top seeds on Tuesday. The Banks County boys can win the top seed in Region 8-AA will a win over Putnam County at home, the Lakeview Academy boys can take the No. 1 seed in 8-A with a win over Tallulah Falls on Wednesday at home, and the third-ranked West Hall girls can clinch the top seed in 7-AAAA with a win over Chestatee on the road.
The East Hall boys and girls teams can keep pace with Greater Atlanta Christian atop Region 7-AAA with wins over Dawson County on Tuesday in Dawsonville but would still need wins over Fannin County on Friday to send things to a coin flip for the No. 1 seeds.
The Gainesville girls will try to hold off No. 2 Winder-Barrow in 8-AAAAAA on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldoggs can clinch the top seed with a win on Tuesday at the Gainesville gym while the Lady Red Elephants can keep their slim top seed chances alive but would need some help on Friday.
The fourth-ranked Jefferson girls currently sit atop Region 8-AAAA but face a three-game week that concludes with a second showdown with No. 5 and second place North Oconee. The Lady Dragons beat North Oconee in the first meeting.
