Mt. Airy places police chief on leave

Posted 7:02PM on Wednesday 25th January 2017 ( 7 years ago )

MT. AIRY - Mt. Airy Police Department is under new management while town leaders decide how to proceed.

After a called meeting Wednesday night, Mayor Gary Morris said, "We have placed Police Chief Corey Allen on administrative leave pending a review of his employment status."

Asked whether the suspension is procedural, Morris said, "I was advised not to comment beyond what I've told you."

Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell has agreed to serve as part-time interim chief in Mt. Airy until the review is completed.

"We don't know the longevity of it," Morris said.

Morris did confirm the review of Allen has nothing to do with the recent dismissal of Alto Police Chief Tim Vaughan by the council in that Habersham County town.
