Sugar Hill city council members gave their unanimous approval Monday night to annex a parcel of land along Suwanee Dam Road to be used as part of the city's Sugar Loop Greenway.
The 2.42-acre plot sits adjacent to Gary Pirkle Park, and would likely be used an exit for the 16.5-mile multi-use trail around the city, according to Paul Radford, city manager.
"It's property that the city has purchased," said Radford in a phone interview.
"We've slowly assembled several parcels along there that would provide a pathway for our proposed greenway."
Construction on the first few miles of the trail is in the preliminary stages, according to Radford.
"The first, probably, three to four miles will be done this year," said Radford.
Council also got an update at Monday's meeting about the purchase of a 22-acre parcel of land along Ga. 20 near the Chattahoochee River that will likely be used for a new city park.
"We've already done some preliminary renderings on what that park would look like. It'll be a passive park," said Radford.
Passive parks are known more for their open space, trails and picnic areas.
"(Council) actually voted on it several months ago, but we closed it in December," said Radford.
"We do these things in public, but a lot of times people don't notice it."
Council will have to go through the process of officially annexing the land, which Radford said would likely happen in February.
