Piedmont women still perfect in USA South

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — The Piedmont College women stayed unbeaten in USA South Conference play after taking 59-54 victory over Covenant College Friday on the road.

The Lady Lions (9-4, 2-0 USA South) got off the bus firing with their highest scoring quarter of the game notching 20 points in the first, led by the hot hand of Dakota Sullens with 9 points in the quarter. Sullens started the scoring early getting her first two points in under 30 seconds. CARLY SALES hit the only three pointer for Piedmont with a minute and change left in the opening quarter. The Lady Lions had a nine-point lead at the end of the first 20-11.

Two minutes into the second quarter the teams exchanged midrange jumpers putting the score to 22-13. Both teams would go scoreless from the field until the Scots broke the ice with 3:46 left in the half. AMARI PRICE would hit a 2-pointer as the time expired to give Piedmont a 10-point lead going into the locker room 33-23.

Covenant came out of the locker room with a six-point run over the first three minutes of the third cutting the lead to four. With the Scots quickly trimming the PC lead, CARLIE SHIELDS went on a solo 8-point run going 100% from the field and charity stripe in the quarter getting 10 points in the third quarter alone. As the quarter dwindled, BRIDGETTE KELLY scored a 2-point bucket to end the scoring in the third quarter with Piedmont leading 47-35.

In the final five minutes of the contest, Covenant would score 15 points to Piedmont's five cutting the lead of the Lady Lions in the late minutes but the clock would expire before the Scots could battle back from the earlier quarters as Piedmont took the road contest 59-54.

Turning Point
--CARLIE SHIELDS went into over drive in the third quarter going on an 8-point run by herself and finishing the game 7-9 from the field with 16 total points. 

Standout Performances
--CARLIE SHIELDS and DAKOTA SULLENS each tallied 16 points in the contest, Sullens netted 9 in the first quarter and Shields locked on in the third scoring 10 in that period alone. 
--Covenant's Emma Grimes picked up a double-double in the contest with 10 rebounds and 11 points.

Inside the Box Score
--The Scots turned the ball over 26 times throughout the game and PC was able to capitalize in the extra possession grabbing 24 points off turnovers
 
News & Notes
--The Lady Lions are now 12-1 against the Scots of Covenant College not losing since the first meeting in 2009.

--The Lady Lions will travel into the Volunteer State to take on Maryville College in Maryville, TN January 7th at 4 PM.
