WALNUT GROVE — Buford took the first battle for the top spot in Region 8-AAAAA Thursday.
Junior hurler Logan Caymol dominated Walnut Grove striking out 13 and surrendering just one hit in leading the Lady Wolves to a 4-0 win over Walnut Grove. It was Caymol's (6-0) sixth complete game and fourth shutout of the season.
The two teams came into the game ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in Class AAAAA and tied atop the region standings. Buford ran its record to 11-1, 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA while Walnut Grove fell to 10-2, 2-1 in the region. It was also a rematch of the 2015 Class AAAA state championship series.
Buford was led at the plate by junior Gabby Benson, who had two hits and drove in three of the four runs. The Lady Wolves scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to set the tone and added single runs in the third and fifth.
Sophomore Mariah Wicker had two hits, stole a base, and scored two runs. Junior Arielle Oda had a hit, stole a base, and also scored twice for Buford. Sophomore Shea Bayreuther had one hit for the Lady Wolves.
Buford next will play host to Flowery Branch on Tuesday in another key Region 8-AAAAA battle.
