Nowakowski takes over Lanier Tech's Fire Science Technology Program

Lt. Karen Nowakowski, a retired Atlanta firefighter, is the new head of Lanier Technical College’s Fire Science Technology Program.

Nowakowski began her public service career as a Dispatcher/Call-Taker at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and her fire service career as a part-time/volunteer with the Alpharetta Fire Department. Nowakowski later moved to service full-time as a firefighter with the City of Atlanta.

She has also served as a Safety Team Member with the Motorsports Emergency Services, and as a Lab Assistant/Instructor at Lanier Tech. Nowakowski retired from the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department to assume the leadership position at Lanier Tech.

Lt. Nowakowski was awarded the Medal of Valor in 2009, and was the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Firefighter of the Year in 2010.

She has also been featured in two national magazines, Women’s First and Ladies Home Journal.

Her husband, Rob Nowakowski, is a 19-year veteran of Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services and currently holds the rank of Battalion Chief.
