HAYESVILLE, N.C. — Towns County played itself into rarifed air on Friday.
The Indians pulled off a 33-14 win at Hayesville, N.C., that not only represented Towns' first win over Hayesville since 2009 but also its frist season opening win since 2008.
It was an emotional event for new Indians head coach John Cornett.
"My stomach was churning all day just waiting to get that game going," Cornett said. "This is just wonderful; it's hard to describe just how big this is."
Russell Cox, Trent Bradshaw and Kobe Denton all got in the end zone for the Indians (1-0).
"Towns has weapons, and if we use them all we'll put some points on the board," Cornett said. "That's what we did tonight. But we also have a lot to work on."
Towns County had two punt returns for touchdowns called back -- as well as the opening kickoff -- due to penalties.
"We're rolling but we've got a lot to correct," Cornett said.
Towns County will take a bye week to do just that before facing George Walton Academy on Sept. 2 in its Region 8-A opener.
