Drought severity lessens in two northeast Georgia counties

Posted 10:14AM on Thursday 18th August 2016 ( 8 years ago )
The latest national report on the drought shows that its severity has lessened over the past week in a couple of northeast Georgia counties.

Most noticeably, Habersham County has been shifted from a severe to moderate drought classification according to the U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday.

The monitor also lessened the severity of its drought classification for part of Rabun County.  The northeast corner of the county is now considered abnormally dry as opposed to a moderate drought classification.

The report said that some rain in northeast Georgia led to a slight improvement in those counties. However, little or no rain fell in the main areas of Georgia's drought.

In the metro Atlanta area, the monitor added central Fulton County and most of Cobb County to an extreme drought status over the week.  Those areas were previously considered under severe drought.
