Four area golfers get their U.S. Amateur bid going

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich — Four area golfers teed off on their quest for a U.S. Amateur championship on Monday at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Gainesville natives Spencer Ralston and Jackson Bishop joined Buford's S.M. Lee and Cumming's Christopher Guglielmo in the tournament, which will conclude on Sunday.

Gainesville High graduate Ralston, now a freshman for the University of Georgia fired a 2-over-par 72 in the opening round, as did Guglielmo -- part of a huge group tied for 118th.

Fellow GHS grad Jackson Bishop, now a Western Carolina golfer, was two shots back after carding a 74 and tied for 183rd.

Lee, meanwhile, put up a first round 75.

Brentwood, Tenn., competitor Dawson Armstrong leads the tournament with an opening round 64.
