TOCCOA — A Commerce man is facing a list of charges after a chase that began in Habersham County and ended near Toccoa Friday night.
Darren Adam Dawson, 29, allegedly fled from Habersham County deputies on a motorcycle after 9 p.m., said Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa at the scene.
"Habersham County Sheriff's Office began the pursuit," Johnson said. "The pursuit traveled into Stephens County on the Bypass."
Stephens County deputies blocked the intersection of Ga. 106, where Trooper 1st Class T. Sanders of GSP Post 7 fell in behind the chase and was moving into the lead position when the motorcycle crossed the median cut and began traveling southbound in the northbound lane with no lights, Johnson said.
When the motorcyclist met oncoming traffic in the area of Ga. 145, he attempted to cross the grass median, lost control and was ejected from the motorcycle, Johnson said.
Johnson said Dawson ran on foot down Ga. 145 to a point along the railroad before entering the wooded area.
"Dawson wasn't following lawful commands to put his hands up, so [Sanders] tased him," Johnson said.
Dawson was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of what Johnson termed road rash-like injuries from the crash.
Though the Habersham County portion began earlier, GSP entered the chase at 9:37 p.m. and reported the crash at 9:38 p.m.
Johnson said there was no contact between any patrol vehicle from Habersham, Stephens or GSP and the motorcycle.
