CUMMING — Sam Thomas broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 10th inning with a two-run home run to ignite a five-run inning and propel Buford to an 8-3 win over South Forsyth Tuesday in the Lady Wolves' season opener.

Buford was poised to grab the victory in regulation taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh behind junior hurler Logan Caymol. But the Lady War Eagles got a two-run double from Ginny Grice with just one out. Caymol was able to get out of the jam stranding the winning run at third.

It stayed that way until the 10th. After Thomas's blast, Shea Bayreuther doubled in Gabby Benson, Maddie Marchiando, and Katie Perkins to push the lead to 8-3. Ansley Byers retired South Forsyth in order in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the win.

Buford (1-0) took the initial lead in the third on a RBI triple by Mariah Wicker and a RBI single from Hannah Jo Hyatt to make it 2-0.

Caymol went seven innings allowing just four hits and striking out five batters. Byers went the final three innings in relief to earn the win scattering two hits and striking out three.

Arielle Oda and Benson each had two hits for Buford.
