ATLANTA (AP) — The Braves have placed ace Julio Teheran on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a strained right lat muscle.
He was originally injured during a four-inning start July 22 at Colorado. The 25-year-old waited eight days before his next start and allowed five hits, three runs and one walk in five innings in a 9-5 loss to Philadelphia.
After the game, Teheran said he felt fine, but his soreness got worse Sunday and Monday.
The two-time All-Star is on the DL for the first time in his six-year career.
"I feel kind of weird about it," Teheran said before Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh. "I'm trying to get the good part of it and come back and finish the rest of the season."
Interim manager Brian Snitker said after the Phillies game that Teheran looked unusually fatigued. His fastball velocity dropped to the high 80s.
On Tuesday, Snitker said Teheran has been prescribed rest. Barring a setback, the right-hander will likely make a rehab start before returning in a couple of weeks.
Teheran ranks sixth in the NL with a .205 opponents' batting average. His 2.81 ERA ranks 10th. He's winless in 12 home starts this year, 3-9 overall.
