A former superintendent for Barrow County Schools, Dr. Robert Ronald Saunders, is charged with theft by taking in a fraud investigation at Adult Literacy Barrow.
The Barrow County Sheriff's got a tip Monday from the organization's board of directors, which it said has been fully cooperative with the investigation, about potential fraudulent activity of the organization's finances.
The board provided all the necessary documentation deputies needed, said Cpt. Ryan Sears in a news release Thursday.
Dr. Saunders. of Winder, faces a single felony charge, and was booked into the Barrow County Detention Center. Sears said the investigation is ongoing, and more charges are possible.
The Athens Banner Herald reports Saunders was superitendent of Barrow County Schools from 1988 to 2009. The newspaper also reports Saunders is the Executive Director of Adult Literacy Barrow.
