ROSWELL— Former Gainesville High golf standout Jackson Bishop did something pretty rare on Wednesday.

Bishop earned a spot in the 2016 United States Amateur on Wednesday courtesy at the United States Golf Association (USGA) qualifier at Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Roswell -- a feat that matched Stuart Moore's achievment in 2004 while a member of the Auburn golf team, which was the last time a Gainesville grad snagged a place in the U.S. Amateur.

Bishop shot a 36-hole total of even-par 140 to grab one of the four qualifying spots available, joining Buford resident S.M. Lee, who also shot 140 at the event -- there was a three-way tie at 140, six shots back of leader Luke Schniederjans (134).

A 2014 Gainesville grad, Bishop is currently a junior on the Western Carolina University golf team.

One of the most prestigious amateur golf events in the world, the US Amateur will be held August 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

Moore graduated from Gainesville in 2001 and earned his spot at the Oakmont Country Club in Philadelphia.
