LULA — If the Lula City Council wants to place alcohol issues on the November election ballot, a called meeting will be required.
That's because the city council didn't take up the matter during Monday night's meeting and the deadline for submitting ballot issues is approaching rapidly.
"The city attorney, as we know from the last work session, was creating the ballot questions that have to be presented to the council, then [city council] gets the opportunity on any ballot question to approve it to be placed on the ballot," Bergin said.
Last week, City Attorney Lucky Chandler met with the city council in a called work session for the purpose of discussing possible ballot issues related to alcohol sales, including package sales of liquor and consumption of beer and wine on premises at restaurants.
"Tonight, the city attorney wasn't here," Bergin said. "He had one of his colleagues present. I would expect there was a mix-up between them."
Since no action was taken Monday and the council's next regular voting meeting is a month away, Bergin said information from Chandler will be forwarded to the city's elected officials so they can determine how to proceed.
"In the next day or two, we'll get that information forwarded on to the council so they can decide if they want to address it in a separate meeting, and we'll go forward from there," Bergin said. "In order for it to be a ballot initiative and be on the November ballot, any ballot initiative will have to be presented to Hall County Elections no later than Aug. 1."
The matter could be discussed in a called city council meeting, but Bergin said that decision rests with council members.
