The city of Gainesville's historic downtown square will be the site of the city's first adult prom Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
Gainesville Main Street Manager Regina Mansfield said its a great opportunity for couples in the community to "redo" prom at Downtown Drafts in the square. There will be a large tent on Bradford Street with a DJ and dance floor to bring adults a chance to relive prom night.
"The idea for adult prom came about after talking to businesses downtown about prom season, which lead to us all telling 'horror' stories from our own proms. We all started laughing and said, 'maybe we need a prom redo.' We decided to do adult prom just because ,' said Mansfield.
The event begins at 6 Saturday night on the Gainesville square and tickets are $35 singles or $45 per couple. Tuxedos and ball gowns are not required for the event, but Mansfield says there will be a "prom feel" to the night with limos, dances and even a complimentary traditional prom photo that might look like the one you remember from high school.
"With the ticket, you get a great 2016 Gainesville Adult Prom souvenir photo, a souvenir koozie, wristband and great deals to our restaurants . And two or three restaurants will be hosting after parties as well. Several of our hotels have been asking what the adult prom is because they have gotten several reservations," Mansfield said.
City officials are hopeful that the event will be reoccurring and are already planning for a larger venue for next year to accommodate attendees.
