ATLANTA — While Atlanta awaits the beginning of its first Major League Soccer Season, the city is already home to champions on the pitch.
The Atlanta Silverbacks recently claimed the NPSL South Atlantic Conference title.
The Silverbacks defeated Tobacco Road FC 2-1 in overtime this past Saturday at Silverbacks Park, with Atlanta’s Mitch Garcia earning man of the match honors after scoring the game-tying goal in the 88th minute.
Tobacco Road FC broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute, only to be followed by Garcia's equalizer before the end of regulation. Knotted at 1-1 through regulation, the Silverbacks went on to claim the crown in overtime thanks to Avery Shepard's game-winner.
The Silverbacks will now travel to face Miami on Saturday, where a win would pit Atlanta against the winner of the Chattanooga FC vs. Dutch Lions FC contest for the NPSL South Region Championship.
