Sugar Hill city council members have opted to move forward with a development that would bring a full-service Wyndham hotel, condominiums and office and retail space to downtown Sugar Hill.
The mixed-use development would be located in the block of Nelson Brogdon Boulevard, Hillcrest Drive, Temple Drive and West Broad Street.
Monday night council approved the design review phase of the project, which still faces final approval by the planning commission and city council.
"There's still an issue that will need to go before the council dealing with the height of the structures," said Paul Radford, Sugar Hill city manager in a phone interview.
The current codes call for a maximum building height of five stories, though the developer, Wakefield Beasley and Associates, is proposing a plan that would eclipse that height.
Otherwise, according to city documents, the development fits into the city's Central Business Overlay District guidelines.
Radford said the city owns the land for the proposed development, which would also include a parking structure with a pedestrian bridge linking it to other portions of the development.
COUNCIL DENIES TOWNHOME DEVELOPMENT
Council denied the application of Home South Communities to put a private, gated townhome development on Buford Highway, just south of Ga. 20.
Radford said council didn't give a specific reason for the denial, but said the discussion indicated that the 79-unit development would not fit in that area, which contains more business and office space than home developments.
"Home South has been a great partner for Sugar Hill. I'm sure they'll have other developments in the future," said Radford.
