A Gwinnett County inmate was captured in Rockdale County Thursday afternoon, less than nine hours after he escaped from the Gwinnett County Correctional Institute.
John Alexander Goodwin, 27, assumed his cell mate's identity after learning the inmate was schedule for release Thursday morning, according to a press release from the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Shannon Volkadov said in a release that deputies were tipped to Goodwin's location in Rockdale County. Upon their arrival, Goodwin jumped in a vehicle and attempted to flee, striking an assisting Rockdale County deputy with the vehicle. Rockdale County deputies were able to apprehend Goodwin after a vehicle pursuit.
Goodwin is currently receiving medical treatment in Rockdale County after his vehicle rolled over at the end of the vehicle pursuit. Additional charges may be forthcoming. He will be held in the Rockdale County Jail when his treatment is completed.
Goodwin was sentenced to the prison's work release program on April 1 of this year. He had previously been arrested in February for probation violation. Goodwin had also been arrested on May 17 on an escape charge from a work release program and was returned to the Gwinnett County Jail.
In Gwinnett County, Volkadov said he faces additional charges of false swearing and escape.
Volkadov said the jail is reviewing release procedures following the escape.
