It's something no one expects to see driving through rural Northeast Georgia, but Banks County officials found themselves wrangling an out-of-place alligator near Banks Crossing Tuesday afternoon.

"Our dispatch center received a report around 5:30 p.m. from Banks County EMS in reference to an alligator in the area of Industrial Park Drive and Industrial Park Boulevard," said Banks County Sheriff's Lt. Carissa McFaddin. "Deputies were unable to respond immediately due to a high call volume at the time."

The sighting of the six- to seven-foot gator was a short distance from the heavily-populated Banks Crossing shopping area.

Banks County Fire/EMS personnel responded and assisted the county's code enforcement officer in bringing safe closure to the incident.

"Banks County Code Enforcement Officer Paul Ruark responded and successfully captured the reptile," McFaddin said. "We are currently awaiting the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to respond to our office to retrieve the animal."

Banks County officials captured an alligator near Banks Crossing late Tuesday afternoon. The reptile is estimated to be six to seven feet long, and it will be turned over to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
