NEW YORK — Former Gainesville High and current University of Georgia outfielder Skyler Weber was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 18th round Saturday on the third day of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.
Weber, a rising senior, had his best season as Bulldog as a junior lead the team in hitting with a .314 average to go with a team-high 77 hits with four home runs and 33 RBI, which was third on the team.
Weber was the starting catcher for Gainesville but has played mostly outfield since joinging the Bulldogs. He was projected to take over at catcher for Georgia this past season but remained in the outfield where he could utilize his speed.
He was one of five Georgia players selected through the 18th round in the 2016 draft.
Former North Hall graduate and fifth-year Truett-McConnell senior Jared Oliver (RHP) was taken by he Boston Red Sox in the 26th round (778th pick). Just two picks later (780th pick) recent Buford grad and University of Georgia-signee Justin Glover (LHP) was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Overall, 60 players from the state of Georgia were taken over the three-day draft. Buford standout outfielder Brandon Marsh was the highest selection for northeast Georgia players going to the Los Angeles Angels with the 60th overall pick.
