The search on Lake Lanier for a missing person has been temporarily suspended, with authorities finding no results in their hunt for a woman last seen late Wednesday night in the area of Lanier Point Park.

Crews have been searching both the water and the land in the area for Lizeth Ruby Ruiz, 23; she was last seen recreating with friends in the area, said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department.

"Not only are we investigating here on the land and on water, but we also have the investigators trying to determine what led to her going missing," said Holbrook.

Ruiz was not believed to be in the water, but crews were searching as a precaution, said Holbrook in a previous interview.

"We have spoken with family witnesses, trying to track down her last known whereabouts, track her movements for the last couple weeks ago," said Holbrook.

Ruiz does not have a history of disappearing or running away, something that quickly spurned authorities into "search mode" when they were contacted; Holbrook said that gave them reason to believe something may have happened to her.

"We know she was here at the park with friends, but what happened after that remains under investigation," said Holbrook.

Following the suspension of the search late Monday evening, Holbrook said authorities would take the opportunity to pivot their search and "[focus] our efforts on the investigation into the disappearance at this time."
