A North Georgia racer is among the 11 drivers named to the NASCAR Next class for 2016-17.
Spencer Davis, from Dawsonville, Georgia, was announced this week as a member of the latest class. The 17-year-old started his career on the local tracks, first racing in the go-kart ranks, and then scoring wins in Trucks and Late Models at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga.
From there, Davis worked his way up into the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified ranks, and currently competes on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. So far, he has recorded three top five finishes in five starts this season driving the No. 41 Ranier Racing with MDM Chevrolet.
All the while, he has continued to compete on the southern short tracks, winning at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in Tennessee, at Five Flag Speedway in Pensacola, Florida, Mobile International Speedway in Alabama, Southern National Motorsports Park in Lucama, NC and at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, among others.
The NASCAR Next program puts young drivers in the spotlight, giving them exposure to potential sponsors, teams and members of the media to help them move forward in the NASCAR ranks.
The other drivers in the 2016-17 class includes Harrison Burton, Collin Cabre, Alon Day, Tyler Dippel, Todd Gilliland, Noah Gragson, Gary Klutt, Julia Landauer, Ty Majeski and Matt Tifft.
