HELEN — A fire just before 6 a.m. Sunday caused heavy damage to one of the most well-known features at Unicoi State Park near Helen.

That fire, at one of the barrel cabins at the park off Ga. 356, started from outside the structure, likely from leaves that caught fire from the grill, said White County Public Safety Director David Murphy.

Firefighters from Helen Fire Department and White County Station 3 (Sautee-Nacoochee) and Station 7 (Chimney Mountain) extinguished the fire at Cabin A-4.

Murphy said that cabin likely is a total loss because of damage sustained.

No injuries were reported.
