Remainder of Athens Highway between Gainesville and Athens scheduled for widening

The remaining seven miles of US 129/SR 11, better known as Athens Highway in Hall County, is now scheduled to be widened, following the recent awarding of bids by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

GDOT announced the May 6 bid awards in a news release issued Wednesday.

The seven miles of roadway in questions are located from SR 332 at Talmo in Jackson County to SR 323 in Hall County and completes the connection from Gainesville to Athens. 

The project also includes construction of a bridge and approaches over Allen Creek.

The $44.1 million contract was awarded to Pittman Construction Company of Conyers. Transportation officials said the completion date for the project is April 30, 2020.
