DNR looking to hire conservation rangers

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is searching for some fresh faces to add to the law enforcement division.

The DNR is looking for conservation rangers, according to Lt. Col. Jeff Weaver, assistant director of the law enforcement division.

"Every day is different, it's an adventure, your pick-up truck is basically your office," Weaver said. "You can get out to the end of your driveway everyday, turn left or turn right, whatever you feel like, you're not punching a clock like at a factory, per se. You're out there in the great outdoors."

Weaver said they aren't just looking for people who love the outdoors.

"We do consider them very stringent. We do have an education requirement...  You've got to have certain medical standards - hearing, vision - certain physical standards to pass physical PT tests, extensive background tests - background interviews, oral interviews before the hiring panels - it's a pretty intensive process."

Weaver said applicants also need to be 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, be able to obtain or have a drivers license and take an post-entrance exam, as well as have an associate's degree or equivalent hours.

"It's not for everyone, it's not your basic 9 to 5 job. It's a lot of odd hours, before daylight some times, a lot of times after dark, weekends, holidays, you're out there when people are recreating."

This is the first time in three years the DNR is looking to hire law enforcement.
