LULA — The Lula City Council heard good news from City Manager Dennis Bergin Monday night: five building permits have been issued in a dormant subdivision.
"Waterford Glen is a subdivision in Banks County that's off Railroad Avenue," Bergin said. "It's 106 lots, got started just about when the economy started to slow down."
About a dozen homes were constructed before work came to a halt in the economic downturn, and until now there has been no significant activity to speak of, city officials have said.
"The good news is today that we've got a new developer who is selling lots and has sold the first 10 lots to a gentleman out of Habersham County that we're familiar with," Bergin said. "The price point of the homes, I think, is going to be $160,000 to $180,000. I think everybody will be real pleased with the product, so we're tickled to see that coming back onboard. It's one of many."
Already, five permits have been issued for the first portion of the lots purchased.
"We're beginning to see some activity," said Mayor Milton Turner.
Lula is located partially in Hall County and partially in Banks County.
Bergin said revenue generated by the new homes will help the city with debt service on the wastewater treatment plant, and also will help offset improvements to water facilities.
"All is good when the economy is warming up," Bergin said.
