GAINESVILLE — Chestatee held off a late Stephens County rally to take a 6-5, Region 8-AAAA victory Wednesday night at War Eagle Field.
Stephens County led 1-0 after the top of the first inning but Chestatee rallied to take a 3-1 lead into the fifth. The Indians tied the game at 3 before the War Eagles retook the lead 5-3 heading into the sixth. Stephens County cut the lead to 5-4, Chestatee pushed it back to 6-4 heading into the seventh and then held on in the top of the seventh for the win.
Austin Sargent got the win for Chestatee (7-12, 4-6 Region 8-AAAA) pitching 5 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out four. Will Cantrell picked up the save allowing two runs on five hits in two innings.
Cantrell and Clay Coffey each had two hits and one RBI for the War Eagles. Sargent had two hits, and Sean Irick and Joe Sutton had one hit each for Chestatee.
The War Eagles next will travel to rival North Hall on Friday.
