DEMOREST — The Piedmont College softball team continued its dominance at home this season with a pair of victories Wednesday over Emory & Henry College 7-1 and 8-0. Powerful pitching led the way for Piedmont as Sarah Walker and Melissa Eckman pitched complete games allowing a combined five hits.
Piedmont trailed after the first inning 1-0 in game one after an unearned run was allowed, but evened the score in the bottom of the second as Haley McCurry hit an RBI single scoring Allison Vaughn. Piedmont added another run in the third as Jessica Bagwell singled to score Abby Smith giving Piedmont a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Piedmont put up four runs including a bases-clearing double by Vaughn as the Lady Lions led 6-1 and added a run in the sixth to seal the victory. Walker pitched the complete game giving up three hits, no earned runs while walking one and striking out two.
In game two it was all Lady Lions as Piedmont put up a run in the second, then tacked on three more in the third inning as Josie Coker doubled to score a pair and later scored herself on a Bagwell single. The game ended on a run rule in the fifth inning as Smith stole home, then Allyson Gentry ended it all with a three-run triple to seal an 8-0 victory.
Eckman threw all 5 innings giving up two hits and striking out four. Both Walker and Eckman picked up the victories as Walker is now 7-4 while Eckman is 4-3 this season.
The Lady Lions will host Pomona-Pitzer College Thursday for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
