The Stephens County Sheriff's Office called in state officials to help investigate the death of a jail inmate last week.
'On Friday, Feb. 26, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist in a death investigation occurring at the Stephens County Jail," said GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles in a prepared statement. "The investigation revealed that inmate Barry Mullinax, age 24, was incarcerated at the jail on felony charges when he attempted to commit suicide by hanging."
Mullinax was transported to an area hospital, where he died.
The investigation is ongoing, Miles said late Wednesday afternoon.
