SUWANEE — Attendees at events in the city of Suwanee can now enjoy distilled spirits, thanks to action taken Tuesday night by the city council.
Council, in the absence of Mayor Jimmy Burnette, who was sick, approved an amendment to the city's alcohol ordinance that will permit the sale of distilled spirits at city events.
The city had already allowed the sale of beer and wine on city property at their events.
"It's largely an administrative adjustment to our current regulations," said Marty Allen, city manager.
The new rules are set up specifically for the city's event season, which will include multiple events with vendors looking to sell distilled spirits.
One such event is happening March 5, called "Guess Who's Coming to Cocktails" at Town Center Park, an event that hopes to raise awareness for public art.
"It will allow for flexibility. We have been approached from some entities that want to have some private events with distilled spirits, and this would allow them to do that," said Allen.
He said there will be other events in the future that will include distilled spirits, but Allen said the popular "Suwanee Beer and Wine Festival" will still be just that: beer and wine.
