CLARKESVILLE — Barrie Aycock was sworn in this week as only the second female mayor in Clarkesville history.
Mayor Pro Tem Casey Ramsey administered the oath of office to Aycock at the beginning of Thursday's city council work session.
Aycock resigned her seat on the Clarkesville City Council to qualify for the mayor's post, left vacant by the death of Terry Greene in December.
"I believe it is vital that we maintain continuity within the leadership of the city as we complete the rebuilding of our fire-damaged buildings, and work toward implementing our master plan for downtown," Aycock said.
The only other female mayor in the city's history was Amilee Graves, who was elected in 1950 and served six consecutive two-year terms, choosing not to run in 1963. She was re-elected to the position by write-in votes in 1973, though she didn't run. Graves also was among the first female mayors in Georgia.
A special election to fill Aycock's council seat will occur during the General Primary Election on May 24.
